Walking in the Light | Monday Invocation
“O house of Jacob,
come, let us walk
in the light of the Lord!”
Isaiah 2:5 NRSVUE
Today, we start a new year in the Christian calendar with the beginning of Advent. Many of us in the Western world still have another month to embrace the new beginnings and promises of a new year. The Advent season calls us to ground ourselves in hope, peace, joy, and love as we not only engage with scripture but also with one another for the year to come.
At the beginning of the second chapter of Isaiah, we see a vision of God’s dream of the world. This dream takes place in a time where there was conflict, fear, and injustice, yet a picture of peace is painted.
In this season of Advent, may we remember that striving for peace is not just an act that is reserved for our leaders. We are all called to strive for peace and the hope our collective work brings: a hope for a future where weapons are repurposed to become tools to cultivate life and not to destroy, where we lean into community and are not condemned for our differences, but care for one another is freely given.
As LGBTQ+ Christians and allies, we are not strangers to conflict, fear, or injustice. Many of us carry the weight of words, doctrines, and experiences that have felt more like weapons than instruments of peace and nurture. And yet, Isaiah’s vision invites us to imagine that even these can be transformed: that what once harmed us might one day be reshaped into tools that nurture belonging, healing, and peace. We are invited to walk in the light of that hope.
What hopes for peace and reconciliation feel especially meaningful to you right now - either in your own life or in the world?
